Bio:Wrestling the Canon is my fledging attempt at an online film journal. A long time film junkie, I spent much of my childhood pouring over film books, learning the ins and outs of the accepted film canon, as well as some writers vociferous opinions against it. Now in my mid-20s, I feel ready to start constructing my own film canon, not by denying the canon that came before me, but synthesizing its wisdom with (hopefully) my own. My model for this is my favorite film book, the film book I grew up on, Danny Peary's Alternate Oscars. Eventually, I would like to attempt to write a similar book, not so much with the anticipation that it would be published, but because I relish the idea of taking on the totality of film history. As I work towards that absurdly ambitious goal, this film journal will keep me busy, with weekly film reviews (of both new and old films) and monthly lists, list commentaries and full-length articles on various film topics. I'll also include random blogs that discuss issues pertaining (however loosely) to the world of film. I'm writing this film journal for my own enjoyment, and while I hope others might enjoy it, I certainly will not be offended if you find it ridiculously pretentious or just simply ridiculous. Most film writing can be categorized thus, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it all the same. Film writing can be pretentious, portentous or just plain dull, but some film writers (Pauline Kael, Anthony Lane, David Edelstein and Danny Peary to name a few) have made me laugh, made me think and most importantly, pointed me in the direction of new and good films. I'm hardly the writer that Kael, Lane, Edelstein or Peary is, but I'd like all the same to leap into the scrum they inspired me to love. For I don't just love film, I love film criticism too. This film journal will mark my journey into both.
